Nanoparticles and GMP
The Nanoparticles and GMP facility is dedicated to the development, processing, and characterization of nanoparticle-based formulations under conditions aligned with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. This laboratory is equipped to support research and preclinical-scale production activities, with a particular focus on reproducibility, scalability, and quality control.
The facility enables precise manipulation of physical and chemical parameters essential to nanoparticle synthesis and processing. It includes equipment for thermal treatment, controlled mixing, and homogenization, ensuring optimal conditions for batch reproducibility. Systems for ultracentrifugation, microwave-assisted processes, and fine-tuned stirring provide the necessary control for size and surface engineering of nanoscale materials.
Characterization capabilities include dynamic light scattering for size and zeta potential analysis, pH monitoring, and tools for thermal stability and dispersion assessment. Temperature-controlled ovens and ultrasonic baths further support drying, sterilization, and cleaning workflows according to rigorous laboratory standards.
This environment is designed to facilitate projects at the interface between nanotechnology, pharmaceutical development, and biomedical research. It supports researchers through every phase, from formulation optimization to pilot-scale production under protocols compatible with GMP guidelines.
The Nanoparticles & GMP facility focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and purification of nanoparticles for biomedical applications, including regulatory-compliant formulations. It is equipped with high-performance analytical and preparative instrumentation and includes an academic GMP-compliant clean room for nanoparticle production, supporting translational research and clinical development.
Ilaria Elena Palamà
Ilaria Elena Palamà is a senior permanent researcher at CNR-NANOTEC in Lecce, with several years’ research experience in nanotechnology with an emphasis on Nanoparticles (NPs) for gene/drug delivery in cancer. She received a Master's Degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine from the University of Bari (2008) and a PhD in Smart System and Technology-Nanoscience, with honours, from Salento University (Lecce, 2012). For her research activity, she has been awarded with several national and international prizes. She has participated in active collaborations with other local, national and international research groups.
