Dr. Elisa De Luca is a Researcher at the Institute of Nanotechnology (CNR-NANOTEC) in Lecce, Italy. Her research focuses on the study of neurovascular diseases adopting advanced imaging techniques applied to nanomedicine and drug delivery.

She obtained her PhD in Molecular Medicine, with a specialization in Molecular Biotechnology, at the University of Turin in 2011. Her doctoral thesis explored molecular mechanisms underlying cerebrovascular diseases. She previously earned both her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Molecular Biotechnology at the same university. During her academic training, she carried out a research period at the Department of Cell Physiology and Metabolism of the University of Geneva, Switzerland, studying intramolecular interactions through advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques (FRET and TIRF).

Since 2011, Dr. Elisa De Luca has worked in several leading Italian research centers, including the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Center for Biomolecular Nanotechnologies (CBN@UniLe) and the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (CNR-IMM). Her work has combined molecular and cell biology with nanotechnology, focusing on the synthesis, functionalization, and biological evaluation of hybrid nano- and micro-systems. Her research has contributed to the design of nanomaterials for cancer immunotherapy, drug delivery, and the study of oxidative stress-related diseases. A significant part of her scientific activity involves in vivo studies using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) model, a powerful vertebrate system that enables real-time visualization of biological processes through fluorescence microscopy. She has expertise in high-resolution fluorescence microscopy, including confocal, multiphoton, lightsheet and super-resolution techniques (STED, SIM, and STED and gated-STED), as well as in vitro 3D cellular models and organ-on-chip systems for drug screening.

Dr. Elisa De Luca is the author or co-author of over 30 peer-reviewed publications in international journals, with an h-index of 19 and more than 1,900 citations (Scopus). She is also co-inventor of a patent related to imaging probes for biological applications.
